In a nation teeming with diversity, culture, and tradition, the power to shape the future lies in the hands of its youth. India, the world’s largest democracy, boasts a vibrant, dynamic population with the potential to bring about monumental change. This article is a wake-up call, addressing the youth of India and the profound emotional dimensions of their pivotal role in shaping the country’s democratic landscape. We will delve into the evolution of India’s voting system and the intricate interplay of factors influencing young mind’s contributions to advancing it.

A Technological Leap: Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs):
The adoption of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in 1982 marked more than just a
technological advancement; it triggered a shift in the mindset of trust and transparency in the electoral process. Recent events, such as the 2022 state elections, have reinforced the emotional perception of their reliability and accuracy. In these elections, voters’ trust in EVMs played a pivotal role, and their psychological connection to these machines further solidified.

Mobilizing through Digital Democracy: Online Voter Registration and Verification:
Recent events have highlighted the significance of online voter registration. During the 2023 local elections, an upsurge in young voters utilizing online platforms for voter registration was witnessed. The convenience and accessibility of these platforms resonated emotionally with young citizens, making them more likely to engage in the electoral process. The surge in young voter registration was a clear indication of the emotional appeal of simplified processes.

Knowledge is Power: Voter Education Campaigns:
In recent times, voter education campaigns have seen a surge in popularity, primarily
through social media. Young activists and influencers have been instrumental in this trend. The psychological impact of creative and relatable campaigns became evident in the higher voter turnout among young people. For example, in the 2022 nationwide youth voter registration drive, young campaigners used storytelling and relatable content to motivate their peers. The emotional connection created through these campaigns played a pivotal role in increasing voter participation.

The Psychology of Freebies in Indian Politics:
The recent petition filed in the Supreme Court brings into focus the psychological aspects of freebies in Indian politics. Political parties have begun to promise “irrational freebies” to influence voters, such as free electricity, water supply, monthly allowances, and gadgets like laptops and smartphones. The psychological dimension here revolves around voter behavior and the perception of benefits and their impact on citizens’ lives.

From Data to Democracy: Election Apps and Online Information:
The 2024 regional elections showcased the power of mobile apps and online platforms. These platforms provided crucial election-related information, and young app developers, with their understanding of the emotional needs of their generation, created user-friendly applications that fostered an emotional connection. The higher turnout of young voters in these regional elections is a testament to the emotional appeal and accessibility of these tools. For example, the “VoteEasy” app, designed by young developers, provided gamified experiences and interactive content, engaging young users emotionally and increasing their participation.

The Power of social media: Mobilization and Outreach:
Recent events have illuminated the immense impact of social media in mobilization and outreach. Young social media influencers and activists have used platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to connect with their peers emotionally, disseminating crucial voter information and inspiring increased voter registration and turnout. Their emotional appeal and the resulting psychological connection with the younger generation have played a pivotal role in shaping political engagement.

For instance, during the 2023 mayoral elections, young influencers organized Twitter chats, Instagram live sessions, and YouTube debates, providing a platform for young voters to engage emotionally and intellectually with candidates and pressing issues. These events not only encouraged young voters to participate but also fostered a sense of community and shared responsibility.

India’s youth, the custodians of innovation and agents of change, are in the vanguard of democracy’s evolution. Recent events highlight their emotional understanding, technological prowess, and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals. As the world’s largest democracy continues to evolve, young minds continue to steer it toward a future that embraces emotional ideals of transparency, inclusivity, and progress. In the story of India’s democracy, the youth are the authors of change, reshaping the narrative with their emotional understanding and active participation.

New Ideas which can be implemented by Election Commission of India: As we can see EVM hacking or vote theft news during the election times, to conduct free and fair elections we cannot even conduct Ballot Voting as it is very difficult to handle the things in our country, it’s better to link Aadhaar Card with the Voter ID as it is a National Identity Card of the citizens which has Unique ID entitled to each person, we can conduct e-voting in e-booths by using fingerprint or biometric scanners, where everyone from the country can vote from their own digital devices or government owned digital devices, which also helps in avoiding the crowd near the polling booths, where as the results will be appear directly in the parliament screen in front of Election Commission of India and the President of India and a live telecast for the people, which will be completely authentic which helps in conducting safe and secure elections under Digital India, it’s time for conducting fingerprint or biometric voting. ONE Person, ONE Finger, ONE Vote.
