The Tragedy of Dr. Abhaya
On August 9, 2024, India was shaken by the horrific rape and murder of Dr. Abhaya, a trainee doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, the sparking nationwide protests and reigniting the debate on women’s safety in India. But this tragedy is not just about one woman—it’s about the systemic failures that have allowed such horrors to become all too common and we have lost a future doctor today.
The Psychology of a Rapist: Understanding the Mindset
What drives a person to commit such a heinous act? The psychology of a rapist is complex, often rooted in deep-seated issues like power, control, and societal conditioning. It’s crucial to understand that these individuals don’t emerge from a vacuum; they are products of the environment around them—one that often glorifies violence, objectifies women, and lacks proper sexual education.
The Role of Politics and Society: A Systemic Failure
In India, the political system itself has become a safe haven for criminals. With numerous MPs and MLAs facing criminal charges, it’s no surprise that there is a lack of urgency in passing laws to protect women. When politicians themselves are implicated in crimes against women, how can we expect meaningful change?
Moreover, the influence of pornography, alcohol, and a corrupt system further exacerbates the problem. The government’s reluctance to ban pornography and alcohol, despite their proven links to increasing sexual violence, raises serious questions. Celebrities and the entertainment industry, too, play a role by promoting harmful content that desensitizes viewers and perpetuates dangerous stereotypes.
Society’s Complicity: A Collective Responsibility
It’s easy to point fingers at the government, but society is equally complicit. The normalization of violence against women, the stigmatization of victims, and the general apathy towards these issues all contribute to a culture where such crimes can thrive. The failure to protect women is a failure of the entire society, not just its leaders.
The Need for Comprehensive Solutions
India doesn’t just need temporary fixes; it requires long-term, systemic change. This begins with banning of alcohol and pornography, both of which contribute to the degradation of societal values. Instead, the focus should shift to sex education, as seen in countries like Germany, where websites like zanzu.be provide comprehensive information. Our government can build a website called kamasutra.gov.in to provide proper sex education from our own ancient text Kama Sutra by Vatsyayana. Also, parents and teachers should give sex education to children age by age.
There should also be regular inspections in all the institutions, especially in hospitals to root out corruption and ensure safety. Punishments for rapists need to be severe and exemplary—perhaps even considering radical solutions like gender reassignment surgery for convicted rapists as a way to make them understand the value of a woman’s body and keep them in the jail or leave them in the society. This punishment should stand as an example to the world.
Respect the Victim
In our pursuit of justice, let us not forget to respect the dignity of the victims. Please refrain from using or circulating the name and photos of Dr. Abhaya, as ordered by the Supreme Court. Let us honor her memory by demanding real, lasting change.
A Call to Action
Who is controlling Bengal? Who is controlling Bharat? Who is trying to make our country weak by corrupting the system? as Gopal Krishna Gokhale famously said, “What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow.” The time for thinking is over; it’s time for action. Bengal must rise again, not just for Dr. Abhaya, but for all women, for every citizen who has suffered under the weight of an unjust system. If we change, things will change. Remember, “If Bengal wakes up today, India will wake up tomorrow.” Come on, Wake up Bharat! Enlighten the world!!
