Guru Ravidas Jayanti – Equality, Devotion, & Spiritual Enlightenment

Today, on 12 February 2025, we celebrate Guru Ravidass Jayanti, honoring the birth anniversary of the great saint, poet, and social reformer, Guru Ravidass. Born in 1450 in Seer Goverdhanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Guru Ravidass became a beacon of love, equality, and spiritual enlightenment. His teachings challenged the rigid caste system that divided society, promoting a message of unity, equality, and devotion to one God.

Guru Ravidass’s hymns, which emphasized the importance of inner purity and devotion, resonated with those oppressed by the caste system, especially the Dalit community. His message was clear: spirituality is not limited by one’s caste, creed, or social background. The true connection with God lies in humility, selfless service, and love for all people.

On this auspicious day, devotees gather in temples and gurdwaras, singing hymns (bhajans) and reciting verses that reflect the Guru’s teachings. The day is marked by processions, prayers (Ardas), and community meals (Langar), all symbolizing the Guru’s ideals of equality, service, and social justice.

Guru Ravidass Jayanti is more than a religious celebration; it serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for equality and justice in our society. It’s a day to reflect on his timeless message and continue working towards a world where every individual, regardless of background or social status, is treated with respect and dignity.

As we remember Guru Ravidass today, let’s strive to embody his teachings by promoting love, humility, and compassion in our daily lives.
