Valour Day (CRPF) – Honoring the Sacrifice at Sardar Post, 9th April

On 9th April, India commemorates Valour Day (CRPF), a day dedicated to honoring the incredible sacrifices and bravery of the men and women of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). This day marks the historic moment in 1965 when CRPF personnel displayed unmatched valor during the Sardar Post battle, where they successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt by Pakistani forces. The day stands as a testament to their undying courage, resilience, and sense of duty.

The Sardar Post Battle – A Defining Moment

On April 9th, 1965, a small contingent of 2nd Battalion, CRPF, stationed at Sardar Post in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, faced an unexpected yet fierce attack by a Pakistani Infantry Brigade. The Pakistani forces, believing they could easily overpower the small CRPF unit, launched a full-scale assault, expecting a swift victory. However, what followed was nothing short of legendary.

The CRPF men, against all odds, fought back with incredible courage and determination. They successfully repulsed the attack and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy, eliminating 34 Pakistani soldiers and capturing 4 alive. Never in the history of military battles had a handful of policemen fought back a full-fledged infantry brigade with such remarkable success.

In this conflict, six valiant CRPF soldiers attained martyrdom, giving their lives to ensure the defense of India’s borders. Their sacrifice and bravery remain a monumental chapter in India’s security history. To honor their valor, 9th April is annually celebrated as “Valour Day” within the CRPF, as a tribute to the bravery of these men who displayed extraordinary courage in the face of overwhelming odds.

Why We Remember Valour Day

Valour Day is a tribute to the officers and personnel of the CRPF who laid down their lives during the battle at Sardar Post. This day serves not only to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice but also to recognize the unflinching courage exhibited by every member of the force, both during the battle and in subsequent missions. The event signifies the CRPF’s role as the primary force engaged in internal security and counter-insurgency operations across the country, including border security.

The Sardar Post battle represents the core values of the CRPF—honor, courage, and service to the nation. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the CRPF in safeguarding India’s sovereignty, and the bravery displayed by these men and women continues to inspire generations.

The CRPF – A Pillar of National Security

The Central Reserve Police Force, established in 1939, is one of the largest and most esteemed paramilitary forces in India. Over the years, the CRPF has played an instrumental role in various peacekeeping, law enforcement, and counter-terrorism operations. From Kashmir to the Northeast, from anti-naxal operations to ensuring law and order during elections, the CRPF’s footprint is everywhere.

On Valour Day, it is important to recognize the multidimensional role of the CRPF, which works relentlessly in protecting the country from various security challenges. Their tasks are demanding, but the force remains steadfast in its commitment to national service.

The Need for More Soldiers and Officers with Integrity

While the CRPF’s bravery at Sardar Post remains a shining example, the reality of the present-day scenario demands that we reflect on the need for more soldiers and officers like those brave men who fought in 1965. In today’s world, where corruption and apathy can sometimes seep into institutions, it’s crucial that we have personnel who are driven by honor, duty, and an unwavering commitment to the nation’s cause. We need more officers who, instead of being swayed by political influence or indulging in corrupt practices, remain dedicated to their work, upholding the values that the CRPF stands for.

The example set by those in the Sardar Post battle should serve as a reminder to today’s CRPF soldiers, officers, and even to the younger generation of aspirants, that their duty goes beyond personal interests. They are part of an institution that plays a vital role in ensuring the security of the nation, and their integrity should reflect the same courage and honor demonstrated by those who have come before them.

The Underappreciation of the CRPF’s Work

It is also essential to acknowledge that while the Army, Navy, and Air Force are often in the limelight, the CRPF’s work remains largely underappreciated. The CRPF is called upon to perform a wide range of tasks—sometimes donning the combat uniform as a soldier, other times wearing the khaki of a police , and even carrying out elite missions as part of its COBRA Commandos or providing Z-category security to VIPs. Despite their vast responsibilities, the CRPF doesn’t receive the same recognition as other defense or law enforcement agencies.

It is high time that the CRPF’s contributions are properly highlighted, both within India and on the global stage. One suggestion would be for Bollywood to make a movie about the Sardar Post battle, showing the heroism of the CRPF soldiers. This would give the force the recognition it rightfully deserves, and inspire future generations to take up careers in this noble and challenging field.
