The Story of Good Friday
Over 2,000 years ago, Jesus of Nazareth walked the earth with a message that shook the world: a message of love, mercy, justice, and truth. He healed the sick, welcomed the outcasts, defended the poor, and challenged the powerful who were corrupt. He taught people to forgive, to love one another — even their enemies — and to live in peace.
But His message of truth made enemies among the political and religious leaders. Afraid of losing their power and influence, they conspired to silence Him. Though He had done nothing wrong, He was betrayed by one of His closest followers, arrested, falsely accused, mocked, beaten, and sentenced to die on a cross — the most painful and humiliating death of that time.
And isn’t it still the same today? The world continues to reject truth when it threatens comfort or control. Even now, people who stand for justice, who speak the truth, or who live with integrity often face rejection, threats, and suffering. Good Friday is not just a historical event — it’s a reflection of what continues to happen when truth stands alone in the face of power.
The Mystery of the Cross
On Good Friday, we reflect on the deep mystery of Christ’s suffering with the ancient words of the Church:
“Today He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung upon the Cross.”
“He who is King of the angels is arrayed in a crown of thorns.
He who wraps the Heavens in clouds is wrapped in the purple of mockery.
He who in Jordan set Adam free receives blows upon His face.
The Bridegroom of the Church is transfixed with nails.
The Son of the Virgin is pierced with a spear.”
“We venerate Thy Passion, O Christ.” (three times)

Why Is It Called “Good” Friday?
