Buddha Purnima: The Path to Becoming ‘I Am Buddha’ and Realizing the True Self

Buddha Purnima, also known as Vesak, is one of the most sacred days in human history. It marks the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha—the one who awakened. But more than a historical remembrance, this day is a mirror to our own potential: the possibility that you too can become awakened, free, and fully conscious—the state known as “I Am Buddha“, or in even more ancient terms, “I Am Shiva.”

Full Moon, Full Knowledge: The Cosmic Symbolism of Purnima

In many spiritual traditions, Purnima, or the full moon, symbolizes completeness, illumination, and full knowledge. The moon, in its brightest and most radiant phase, mirrors the mind of an enlightened being—luminous, calm, and free from darkness.

It is no coincidence that many enlightened souls, including Buddha, Mahavira, and even Adi Shankaracharya, Guru Nanak Dev are believed to have been born, attained enlightenment, or left their physical bodies on a Purnima. The full moon reflects the fully awakened consciousness—symbolizing that enlightenment is the full blossoming of awareness.

On Buddha Purnima, the alignment of cosmic energies supports deep meditation and inner clarity. It is the perfect reminder that just as the moon sheds all shadows on this day, we too can shed the illusions of the mind and realize our true nature.

Buddha: The Human Who Became the Eternal

Siddhartha Gautama began as a seeker—like all of us. Through deep meditation, compassion, and wisdom, he dissolved his ego and realized the eternal truth. He became Buddha—not as a name, but as a state of being: the awakened consciousness. But Buddha did more than attain enlightenment—he showed the world the path to it. He laid down the steps for any human to transform themselves and realize their eternal self, which in Sanatana Dharma is also known as Shiva—the pure, formless, limitless Self.

Buddha and Shiva: Two Names, One Truth

In the depths of mystic understanding, Buddha and Shiva are not different. One is the realized mind (Buddha), the other is the eternal soul (Shiva). When you walk the path of Dharma and dissolve the false identity, you reach the same destination—Self-realization. Buddha is the one who has shown us the way to become ‘I Am Shiva’ by first becoming ‘I Am Buddha’.

Mount Kailash: The Silent Proof of Oneness

One powerful symbol of this unity is Mount Kailash. For Hindus, it is the abode of Lord Shiva. But Buddhists also revere it deeply, seeing it as the home of Chakrasamvara and Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion—who many consider a form of Shiva himself. This shared sacredness of Kailash is not a coincidence—it is proof that the true spiritual traditions of both paths are intertwined, both pointing to the same timeless truth.

The Path to Becoming ‘I Am Buddha’ and Realizing ‘I Am Shiva’

This journey is not about changing religions. It is about dissolving illusion, purifying the heart, and awakening to what you truly are. The steps are timeless:

  • Right Karma (Action)
Live with compassion, honesty, and love. What you do returns to you. Every good deed weakens the ego and brings light to the soul.
  • Following Dharma
Walk the Noble Eightfold Path—right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. This is universal truth, not limited to any one faith.
  • Spiritual Knowledge
Seek not just information, but realization. Read, contemplate, and then meditate to discover the eternal Self within—beyond body, beyond mind.
  • Meditation: Vipassana and Stillness
Practices like Vipassana, taught by the Buddha, help you observe reality without judgment. Meditation reveals the silence that is Shiva, the awareness that is Buddha.

Many Lifetimes, One Goal: Liberation”

Both Hinduism and Buddhism teach that liberation takes many lives. Each birth is a lesson. Each struggle is a step. Eventually, when all karma is purified and illusion dissolved, the soul awakens fully. In that moment, the being realizes:

“I Am Buddha” – I am awake.
“I Am Shiva” – I am the eternal Self.
“Aham Brahmasmi” – I am that infinite consciousness.

Refuge in the Eternal: A Living Vow

Buddham Sharanam Gachhami
(I take refuge in the awakened Self)
Dhammam Sharanam Gachhami (I take refuge in the truth of life)
Sangham Sharanam Gachhami (I take refuge in the community of those walking the path)

This is not a religious chant. It is a sacred declaration—that you are ready to walk the path of light, truth, and freedom.

Buddha Purnima: A Light for All Humanity

Let this full moon not be just a holiday, but a reminder: You were born to awaken.

You were born to become
Buddha – the awakened mind,
Shiva – the eternal soul,
Truth itself – beyond all names and forms.

You are not separate.
You are not broken.
You are That.
