National Mathematics Day: When Spirituality Gave Shape to Infinity


Every year on 22 December, We celebrate National Mathematics Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, a name that shines like a constellation in the world of mathematics. This day is not only a tribute to a legendary mathematician but also a reminder that true brilliance often comes from deep faith, intuition, and inner silence, not just formal education.

A Brilliant Mind Born from Humility

Born in 1887 in Erode, Tamil Nadu, and raised in Kumbakonam, Srinivasa Ramanujan came from a modest background. With no access to advanced books, laboratories, or mentors, he taught himself mathematics using a few outdated texts. Yet, what emerged from his notebooks stunned the entire mathematical world.

He worked on some of the biggest and most complex problems in number theory, infinite series, continued fractions, and modular equations—areas that even trained mathematicians found extremely difficult. Thousands of his formulas were not proven during his lifetime; many were validated decades later, proving how far ahead of his time he truly was.

Spirituality as the Source of Answers

What set Ramanujan apart from others was his deep spirituality. He firmly believed that mathematics was a divine language and that his insights were blessings from Goddess Namagiri, whom he worshipped daily. He often said that solutions came to him in dreams or moments of deep prayer and meditation.

For Ramanujan, mathematics was not just logic—it was a form of devotion. He believed equations were meaningless unless they expressed a divine truth. This unique connection between spirituality and intellect allowed him to visualize patterns and relationships that others could not even imagine.

The West Stunned by an Eastern Genius

In 1913, Ramanujan sent a letter full of extraordinary theorems to G. H. Hardy at Cambridge University. Hardy immediately realized that the work could only belong to a rare genius. Ramanujan was invited to England, where he collaborated with some of the greatest Western mathematicians.

Despite cultural isolation, health issues, and racial challenges, Ramanujan produced world-changing work. The Western world, which once doubted Indian scholarship, stood stunned by his brilliance.

1729 – The Number That Defined Ramanujan’s Genius

The number 1729, famously known as the Hardy–Ramanujan number, stands as a timeless symbol of Srinivasa Ramanujan’s extraordinary mathematical intuition and spiritual connection with numbers. During a hospital visit, when the great mathematician G. H. Hardy casually remarked that the taxi number 1729 seemed dull, Ramanujan immediately corrected him, explaining that it was in fact a very special number—the smallest number that can be expressed as the sum of two positive cubes in two different ways, 13+1231^3 + 12^313+123 and 93+1039^3 + 10^393+103. This instant insight, without any calculation, stunned Hardy and later the entire mathematical world. The episode reveals how Ramanujan perceived numbers not as symbols on paper but as living entities full of hidden patterns and divine meaning. To him, mathematics was a form of meditation, where deep concentration and spirituality allowed truths to reveal themselves naturally. Even today, the story of 1729 continues to inspire students and mathematicians, reminding us that with passion, intuition, and faith, even an ordinary-looking number can unlock infinite beauty and profound knowledge.

Royal Fellowship and Global Recognition

In 1918, Ramanujan received one of the highest honors in science—Fellowship of the Royal Society (FRS). He also became a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. These recognitions proved that talent knows no boundaries of race, wealth, or geography.

Where Are the Brilliant Minds Today?

Ramanujan’s life forces us to ask an important question: Where are the Ramanujans of today?
They are everywhere—in villages, small towns, government schools, and underprivileged families—often hidden due to lack of resources, guidance, or confidence.

Brilliance does not disappear; it only waits to be discovered and nurtured. Just as Ramanujan needed a Hardy, today’s children need teachers, mentors, and systems that believe in raw talent.

Ramanujan’s Legacy in Super 30

One of the strongest modern examples of Ramanujan’s inspiration is Anand Kumar’s Super 30 program in Patna, Bihar. The Ramanujan School of Mathematics, founded by Anand Kumar, became the foundation for Super 30—an initiative that provides free, intensive coaching to 30 exceptionally talented but underprivileged students every year to crack the IIT-JEE.

The name “Ramanujan” symbolizes hope—that a child from any background can achieve greatness with dedication, discipline, and belief. Just like Ramanujan, these students prove that poverty cannot limit intelligence.

Importance of Mathematics for Today’s Generation

In today’s world of artificial intelligence, data science, space exploration, and technology, mathematics is more important than ever. It builds logical thinking, problem-solving skills, creativity, and patience. Mathematics trains the mind to see patterns, question assumptions, and seek truth—qualities essential not only for careers but for life.

However, many children fear mathematics. Ramanujan’s life teaches us that mathematics should be approached with curiosity, wonder, and joy, not fear.

Mathematics plays a vital role in shaping the brain development of children, making their minds more active, quick, alert, and conscious. Regular engagement with mathematical thinking strengthens logical reasoning, improves memory, and enhances problem-solving skills. It trains the brain to analyze situations, recognize patterns, and make faster and more accurate decisions. Mathematics also sharpens concentration and discipline, helping children become more focused and mentally resilient. Beyond numbers, it has a strong connection with psychology—success or fear in mathematics can deeply affect a child’s confidence and mindset. When taught with encouragement and curiosity rather than pressure, mathematics builds self-belief and mental clarity, turning children into confident learners and thoughtful individuals capable of facing complex challenges in life.

Connecting Spirituality with Mathematics

Ramanujan showed us that spirituality and mathematics are not opposites—they are deeply connected. Spiritual practices like meditation, focus, discipline, and surrender calm the mind, making it receptive to insight. When children learn to concentrate deeply, respect knowledge, and approach learning with humility, answers come more naturally.

Mathematics, when taught as a discovery rather than a burden, becomes a journey inward—just as Ramanujan experienced it.

A Great Soul Beyond Numbers

Ramanujan was not only a great mathematician but also a great human being—humble, devoted, and deeply sincere. Despite global fame, he remained simple and spiritually rooted. He passed away in 1920 at the age of just 32, but his ideas continue to guide modern science and mathematics.

On National Mathematics Day, Srinivasa Ramanujan reminds us that greatness is born where passion meets faith. His life teaches today’s generation that brilliance is not about privilege, but about perseverance, purity of purpose, and belief in oneself.

Ramanujan proved that when spirituality guides intellect, even the biggest problems of the universe can be solved.
