Born on January 11, 1954, in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, Satyarthi left a promising career in engineering to devote himself entirely to defending the rights of children. He founded Bachpan Bachao Andolan (Save Childhood Movement) in 1980 — a grassroots organization that has been rescuing exploited children, advocating policy change, and promoting education for decades.

For his fearless leadership and lifelong dedication, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, jointly with Malala Yousafzai, “for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.”
