Tashi and the Monk & Loving Karma: Stories of Compassion and Transformation

Tashi and the Monk and its follow-up Loving Karma are two deeply moving documentaries set in the Himalayan foothills of Arunachal Pradesh, India. They tell the story of Tashi, a spirited young girl who was once among the most troubled children at Jhamtse Gatsal Children’s Community, and her journey of healing under the guidance of Lobsang Phuntsok, a former Buddhist monk whose life became a spiritual mission to care for children in need. While Tashi and the Monk introduces audiences to Tashi’s early struggles and the compassionate mentorship that shaped her, Loving Karma revisits her story over 12 years, showing how sustained love and guidance can transform a life.

Lobsang Phuntsok was trained under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to share Tibetan Buddhism with the West. Yet in 2006, he felt a profound spiritual calling—a divine pull to leave his life as a teacher in the United States and return to his birthplace to serve the most vulnerable. In the remote foothills of the Himalayas, he founded Jhamtse Gatsal, meaning “The Garden of Love and Compassion.” Through this unique community, over 125 children receive not only food, education, and shelter, but also unconditional love, belonging, and guidance. His mission is a living example of how a spiritual calling can manifest as practical, transformative action for those in need.

Jhamtse Gatsal offers a nurturing environment where children grow not just academically but emotionally and morally. The organization helps them process trauma, develop resilience, and cultivate empathy, responsibility, and self-confidence. Children learn to trust, to care for others, and to discover their own potential in a space built on love and support. This environment provides a model for teachers and caregivers everywhere, showing that real-life education is about guidance, patience, and connection, not only instruction.

Both films reveal the ripple effects of such compassion. Tashi and the Monk captures the early struggles and breakthroughs of Tashi and other children, while Loving Karma reflects on her growth into adolescence, showing the long-term impact of sustained care. Together, the documentaries are a powerful reminder that mentorship and love can heal generational trauma, and that teachers who embody compassion and patience inspire their students far beyond academics.

For viewers, the story is deeply inspirational: it celebrates a life lived in service, a great soul who answered a call of God to help children, and the transformative power of love and guidance. Lobsang Phuntsok’s work challenges all of us—educators, parents, and communities—to ask how we can bring real care, compassion, and life lessons into the lives of young people.
