Lord Vishwakarma: The Divine Maker of Creation

Human beings have always been creators. From the earliest days of civilization, people have used knowledge, imagination, skill, and physical effort to transform an idea into something useful. A farmer cultivates the land, a carpenter shapes wood, a blacksmith works with metal, a potter shapes clay, a weaver creates cloth, an artist creates through imagination, and an engineer turns calculations and designs into practical structures. Behind every creation there is knowledge, and behind knowledge there is learning, practice, skill, and craftsmanship. This is why Lord Vishwakarma holds such an important place in Hindu tradition. The very name Vishwakarma carries the idea of universal creation—“Vishwa” (विश्व), the universe or world, and “Karma” (कर्म), action, deed, or work. In a simple interpretive sense, Vishwakarma represents the universal maker—the knowledge, skill, creativity, craftsmanship, and work through which creation takes form. He is traditionally revered as the divine architect, craftsman, engineer, and maker, representing the spirit of creating, building, designing, and transforming an idea into reality.

The spirit of Vishwakarma can be seen in almost every profession and in almost every stage of human development. A farmer needs agricultural tools and machines to cultivate the land. A carpenter needs saws, hammers, measuring instruments, and other equipment. A mechanic depends on wrenches, spanners, screwdrivers, diagnostic machines, and other tools. A tailor uses a sewing machine, an artist uses brushes and materials, an engineer uses instruments and software, and a construction worker depends on equipment and machines to build structures. Teachers, doctors, chefs, drivers, electricians, plumbers, craftsmen, factory workers, technicians, and countless other professionals also depend on specialised tools and knowledge to perform their work. The same idea has now entered the digital world. A graphic designer creates through a computer and design software. An animator uses digital tools to bring characters and ideas to life. An architect creates buildings through drawings, computer-aided designs, and three-dimensional models. A filmmaker uses cameras, editing software, lighting equipment, and other technology. A software developer uses a computer, programming languages, and digital tools to create applications and systems. Although these tools may look very different from the traditional tools used by earlier generations, the principle remains the same: knowledge becomes skill through practice, and skill becomes creation through the right tools and human effort.

This is why Vishwakarma Puja is not simply about worshipping a machine or an object. It is about respecting the instruments through which people learn, practise, work, create, earn their livelihood, and support their families. A tool becomes meaningful because of what a person can learn and accomplish through it. A mechanic’s tools help the mechanic understand and repair machines. A carpenter’s instruments allow the carpenter to turn wood into useful objects. A farmer’s equipment helps cultivate food. An engineer’s instruments help turn calculations and designs into practical structures. A computer helps a designer, animator, architect, writer, or software developer transform an idea into something that can be seen, used, or experienced. In this sense, tools are not merely objects kept in a workplace; they become companions in a person’s work and instruments of livelihood. Respecting them also reminds us that every skill requires practice, patience, discipline, maintenance, and responsibility.

Today, Vishwakarma Puja, also popularly known as Vishwakarma Jayanti, is observed in many workplaces, workshops, factories, garages, farms, offices, construction sites, transport businesses, and other places where tools, machines, and equipment are used. On this day, people may temporarily stop their regular work and prepare their tools and machines for worship. Machines, equipment, and vehicles are cleaned and washed, and many people decorate them and apply sandalwood paste and kumkum as marks of respect. Along with the tools, machines, and vehicles, people may also set up an idol or image of Lord Vishwakarma and perform the puja with flowers, sandalwood paste, kumkum, incense or agarbati, lamps, prayers, and mantras. They seek his blessings for knowledge, skill, creativity, successful work, the proper functioning of their equipment, and the safety of everyone who uses it. Vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, scooters, buses, lorries, tractors, and other transport vehicles may also be cleaned and worshipped. In some traditions, people place a lemon beneath a vehicle’s tyre or in front of it as part of the ritual. The exact customs can differ between regions, families, professions, and communities, but the underlying idea is similar: before we continue using the instruments that help us travel, build, produce, repair, create, and earn our livelihood, we pause to acknowledge their importance and seek blessings for their safe and smooth operation. The prayers are also offered with the hope that machines and vehicles will function properly, that the people operating them will have the right knowledge and skills, and that work may continue safely without accidents, damage, or harm.

The same spirit of respect can also be seen among people working in fields where specialised equipment is used for protection and public service. Soldiers, police personnel, and other security and defence personnel may also show respect for their equipment and, where their traditions include it, offer prayers before their weapons and other instruments of duty. The deeper purpose is not simply that the equipment should function properly, but that it should be handled with discipline, responsibility, proper training, and sound judgement. Those entrusted with such equipment have a responsibility to use it lawfully and carefully, protect innocent people, avoid unnecessary harm, and use force only when justified by their duty and applicable law. In the same way, firefighters, doctors, pilots, drivers, engineers, machine operators, and workers in many other sectors depend on specialised tools and equipment that require knowledge, training, skill, maintenance, and responsible operation. Vishwakarma Puja can therefore remind us that every instrument becomes useful and safe only when the person using it has the right knowledge, skill, discipline, and sense of responsibility.

Think about a building standing before us today. What we see is not simply a structure made of bricks, steel, concrete, glass, and machines. Before it became a real building, it began as an idea, a drawing, a design, measurements, calculations, and a plan. Architects created the design, engineers calculated its strength and structure, and workers used their tools and machines to construct it. Many different skills came together to transform an idea on paper or a computer screen into something real that people can use. The same process can be seen in almost everything around us. A vehicle begins with design and engineering before it becomes a machine that can move on the road. A mobile phone brings together industrial design, electronics, software, engineering, manufacturing, and countless human skills. A digital animation begins as an idea and becomes a moving visual through artists, animators, computers, software, and technical knowledge. A game, film, website, application, or digital artwork may begin entirely inside a computer, yet it can eventually influence or become part of the real world. This is the modern expression of creation that Vishwakarma represents—the journey from knowledge and imagination to design, skill, craftsmanship, technology, and finally a creation that exists in the real world.

Vishwakarma Puja therefore carries a meaning that extends far beyond a single profession or a particular type of machine. It connects the ancient respect for craftsmanship with the modern world of engineering, technology, design, manufacturing, transportation, construction, public service, defence, and digital creation. It reminds us that no creation appears by itself. Behind every building, vehicle, machine, tool, piece of software, work of art, or useful object are people who have learned, practised, designed, built, repaired, operated, and maintained it. The tools may change with time, but the human spirit of creation remains the same. Today we may work with computers instead of only hand tools, digital models instead of only paper drawings, advanced machines instead of simple equipment, and sophisticated vehicles instead of traditional forms of transport. Yet the foundation remains knowledge, skill, effort, creativity, and responsible work.

On Vishwakarma Puja, therefore, we can pray not only for successful work but also for the knowledge to understand what we do, the skill to do it properly, the wisdom to use our tools responsibly, the creativity to build something meaningful, and the discipline to maintain the instruments that support our livelihood. We can remember the people behind every creation and respect the tools through which their knowledge becomes practical work. From the simplest hammer to the most advanced machine, from a farmer’s equipment to an engineer’s instruments, from a vehicle on the road to a computer creating a digital world, and from the tools of a worker to the specialised equipment of those who protect and serve society, every instrument can become a means through which human potential takes form. The spirit of Vishwakarma is ultimately the spirit of the maker—the belief that knowledge should become skill, skill should become meaningful work, and meaningful work should become creation that serves life and society.
